Consumer advocacy groups have been fielding complaints about it for years. And yet, for much of the past two decades, the technology industry has successfully framed the phenomenon as an unfortunate but unavoidable consequence of progress — new software, old hardware, a mismatch that nobody planned and nobody profits from.
The evidence, however, tells a different story.
A Pattern Hiding in Plain Sight
In 2017, a Harvard study using Google Trends data found a consistent spike in searches for "iPhone slow" coinciding almost precisely with the release of new iPhone models — not with the release of iOS updates, but with the announcement of new hardware. The timing suggested that something beyond coincidental software incompatibility was at work.
